PORTAGE COUNTY, Ohio– Twelve people have been indicted following a 3-year investigation of a marijuana and prescription pill distribution ring; 11 indictments were handed down by the grand jury this week.
Portage County Sheriff David Doak said an investigation began in February of 2013 when the Youngstown DEA Office and Portage County Sheriff’s Office received information about two brothers who were involved in the trafficking of marijuana and prescription pills.
The brothers, Jeremy and Dirk Cales, were identified with electronic surveillance with the help of Ohio BCI. Their customer base and marijuana provider was found. The operation was found to be going on throughout Summit County, Cuyahoga County, Stark County and Portage County, according to authorities.
Search warrants were executed in June 2015, but no arrests were made then.
The investigation lead to officials seizing hundreds of kilograms of marijuana, prescription medication, cash, guns and several vehicles recently.
