El Monte gets its first marijuana dispensary as Catalyst Cannabis opens its 8th store – The San Gabriel Valley Tribune

Elliot Lewis has come a long way in the cannabis industry.

“I went to school at Berkeley and actually was one of the first people ever to get a medical card; there was only one doctor up there, it was 1996 and I was a freshman at Berkeley,” said Lewis, of Long Beach.

As the story goes, after some years selling real estate following graduation, Lewis began to do some grows in 2013 under Prop 215 — the medical marijuana initiative of 1996. Next thing he knows, he’s opening up his first legal dispensary in 2017 in the Belmont Shore section of Long Beach, which began to allow medical marijuana dispensaries in 2009.
