Athens County will be getting a medical marijuana dispensary, provided that at least one of the nine license applicants meets state guidelines.
Ohio was divided into regions and the regions divided into districts. Each district was assigned a number of licenses that would be available. Athens County is in a district that includes Vinton and Meigs Counties, and one license has been allotted to the district. No license applications were received from from these two counties, making it highly likely a license will be issued for a dispensary in Athens County.
This week, the Ohio Board of Pharmacy released the names of companies that have applied for licenses to operate dispensaries, and nine were submitted to operate in Athens County. The application deadline was Nov. 17, and a total of 370 were received statewide.
The pharmacy board will use a scoring system to decide who gets the 57 available licenses, said board spokesman Cameron McNamee.
